Mandatory General Meeting
November 17, 1999 7 pm
Good Night Inn - 4545 Waring Rd, San Diego
$150 Fine Assessed for Non-Attendance

El Presidente's Report

On November 17,1999 the mandatory General Membership meeting will be the last one at the Good Nite Inn. Man, I am really bummed out, NOT! Thanks to the work by Mike Gregg, beginning in January our meetings will be held at the Quality Resort in Mission Valley. Having seen the facilities and talked with the people there, I think you will agree that this is a definite improvement over our current place.

As advertised, at this month's meeting we will be taking nominations and voting for the new Board of Officers for 2000-2001. This is an opportunity for you to be one of the few, the proud, the San Diego IPSSA Board members. It is an opportunity for you to be all you can be. And don't forget, being on the Board is not just a job, it's an adventure!

Also on the agenda is the selection for the B.K. Taylor award. Please give some thought for a nomination for this spedal award. In addition to the elections, food and drink will be provided and John Tryon of Sun Trek Solar will be providing a seminar on solar repair and troubleshooting. Man, could we pack anymore wacky fun into one night? It will be a full house so please plan on arriving early.

The Chapter extends its congratulations to Rick Bishop of the Escondido Chapter on his election as the next Region 7 director. Rick is a dedicated, knowledgeable and conscientious guy and will an excellent successor to A.J. Wilson.

Attracting Customers
By Terry Bussard

We as entrepreneurs are always thiniiing of ways to promote our businesses. To entice potential customers to choose us instead of our competitor. How can one achieve such goals you may ask? Well, Iwill tell you, just give your customer what he wants, his moneys worth.

Your customer wants a pool tech that knows what he is doing. A tech that is capable of giving good service, protecting his investment by preventive maintenance, and protecting his health with properly sanitized and chemistry balanced pool water. And when needed to make proper and timely repairs. In other words your customer wants a proftssional.

How can we become and maintain that professionalism that attract and maintain quality customers? By educating ourselves, keeping up with the breakthroughs within the industry. To not only keep up with but to surpass our competitors. Any profession must update his tools, skills and know the laws and standards that mandates his trade.

What a wonderfiil vehicle IPSSA is for us. Just by attending the General meetings we can learn about new products whether it be new changes in equipment, chemicals, repair tips, new regulations or just picking some other seasoned pool techs brain.

Yes... you might have guessed by now that being an IPSSA member; you benefit from the education opportunities as well a the professional IMAGE our organization presents. You as a member are viewed as a knowledgeable, desirable and hirable pool technician.

By associating with other pool pros you know you can get the help and the answers you need, because you know who and where to obtain that information, from members who are more than willing to share it with you.

It is unfortunate that there are pool guys out there that don't exactly portray a desirable image of our trade. We must over come that stigma. We as IPSSA members represent each other as well as our industry. Which brings us to, in my opinion WHAT IPSSA IS ALL ABOUT....   In the beginning the concept of
IPSSA was to save money on our liability insurance and to CYA if we get too sick to run our routes.

Our organization has evolved into so much more. We have great benefits like regional picnics, annual dinner dances, benevolent flind, life insurance, emergency lhnds, education opportunities at the chapter meeting, seminars, table tops, trade shows manufacture training classes and education ifinds to pay for those classes. But most importantly IPSSA bujids our businesses by promoting professionalism. This is the way our customers will get the message that they are getting what they are paying for and more.

At this time every two years within our friendly and well organized IPSSA Chapter comes the task of electing new officers to run the Chapter. We need people who will hold things together, to protect, niaintain our rights and benefits. Perhaps develop even more benefits. People who will continue to promote IPSSA in a professional way.

It's a tough job but somebody has to do it, just as long as it isn't me". A comment that I have heard too often. An interesting observation; the people that are willing to serve on the board or committees are the very same people who are or has been your kids Boy Scout leader, soccer coach, Sunday school teacher or served on the PTA at your kids school. Volunteering is a very rewarding experience. Everyone has som~thing to offer, don't let the same ol' people have the opportunity to be blessed by learning and gro'wing through unselfish service.

Well fellow Chapter members, the time has come for you to be that somebody else who steps fonvard and struggle through the next two years, trying to promote our association and promote our businesses.

Serving on the board has been a enlightening experience and I'm glad to had the privilege to serve my Chapter.

New Business
Mike Gregg has scouted out a new location for our General Meetings beginning in January. We will still keep the 3rd Wednesday of the month as our usually meeting date. There is no contract necessary, but we will have to purchase any food and drink from the facility. The rental fee is less than what we are paying now and there is plenty of parking. A motion made and carried that the new facility be our new meeting place the Quality Inn, 2nd floor called the Mission Room.

B.K. Taylor award nominations wili be accepted and voted on at the November 17th General meeting, please see the criteria for this award elsewhere in this issue of the Skimmer.

NOMINTIONS for new Board members for the 2000-2001 term Were made, more nominations will be made and voted on at the MANDATORY November 17th meeting. A discussion took place about having the newsletter professionally designed and printed. Farming out the newsletter duties will make the secretary's job so much easier!

Golf programs are not being funded any longer at the Granite Hills HS in El Cajon. Mark Curran is putting on a golf tournament to raise funds for this program. It will be held at Mt. Wilson on November 21st.

There will be food and raffles. The greens were done in August so it will be perfect for the tournament. Our Chapter will sponsor one hole for $100.

Call Mark Curran if interested in participating.

Table Top
To be held on Saturday, January 15th at the Scottish Rite Center.

Jon McArthur is seeking ideas for manufacture representatives, any full or mini seminars or a hands on room to use at the Table Top.

Vacations
Bob Cummings noted that our customers get an extra week 4 months out of the year. So take advantage of the opportunity to use a few of those as vacations weeks. He also brought copies of the letter he sends to his customers explaining this concept and announcing his planned vacation schedule. He also suggested putting together a web site for a pool tech chat room and to develop a route consolidation plan. There is a web site on Yahoo that can tell you how long it takes to travel from site to site. If interested call Bob Cunnnings.
