President's Message

The Chapter is pleased to have Rick Bishop, Region 7 Director, attend the meeting on June 20th. Rick will be giving the Water Certification test at 6:15 p.m. The members who are not certified were called as a reminder by a chapter board member the first week of June. Study books are available from Mike Gregg. Please call a board member if you would like assistance with any aspect of the test. We realize that not everyone is comfortable taking a test. We are here to help.

The Water Watcher Tags are now available at a price of $.60 per tag (ex $30 per 50 tags). Please bring cash for the amount of purchase or a check, as the chapter will not make change. The tags will be sold before and after the June meeting.

The July (not June) meeting will be preceded by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The dinner and meeting will be held at DiMille's Brothers Restaurant, 3492 Adams Ave. The July meeting will not be held at the Oualitv Resort.

BLOOD DRIVE REVISITED

Some members have asked the question: "how did the chapter's blood drive get started?
About 7 years ago Deborah Johnson, the wife of Dave Johnson, an employee at Superior San Diego, had a life threatening illness. As a matter of fact, she nearly bled to death and required several blood transfusions to save her life. When this information got out to our chapter, several members went to the San Diego Blood Bank and donated blood in her name. The members who gave blood talked about how good it made them feel that they were helping someone and a discussion took place about establishing a chapter blood doner plan and having scheduled dates for donations.
John Gharib, a past president of the chapter and one of our honorary members, laid the groundwork for the chapter blood doner plan and served as the first chairman of the Blood Drive committee. Thanks to those members and chapter supporters who gave blood throughout the year, all of the chapter members and their families are covered for any blood that they might need. Each year, our chapter donates between 40 and SO units of blood to the San Diego Blood Bank.

Today, Deborah Johnson is doing fine, and her desperate need 7 years ago has resulted in several hundred unlts of blood being donated to others in need. The next chapter blood drive breakfast will be held 8AM Saturday, June 23rd, at D.Z. Akins restaurant. Please Join other caring members of our chapter and take 2 hours of your time to donate a pint of blood, because you just never know who, or how much this act of giving will help.
