Director’s Corner
Best wishes, Jack.  Long-time Escondido chapter member Jack Cannon is moving to Lake Almanor in northern California and joining an IPSSA chapter there.  The April chapter meeting was his last in southern California.  Many of you know Jack, and I’m sure you join me in thanking Jack for his years of service in Region 7.  Best of luck, Jack!
Update: Water Watcher Badges. The badges are being printed. Every IPSSA member will receive one in their monthly statement from IPSSA, Inc., hopefully in the June monthly billing.  In addition, R7 purchased 5,000, as did the San Diego chapter.  These badges will be a great PR tool to promote water safety. They can be used as a means to approach media personalities, distributed to new contacts, stocked in the IPSSA company store for purchase, and dis-tributed through chapter web sites.  Cost is 70¢ each; minimum order is $35 (50 badges).

Subcontracting some work?  Want to find out quickly if their contractor’s license number is valid?  Check out the web site for the Contractors State License Board,  www.cslb.ca.gov
The site has a Contractor License Status Check page that works like a charm.  The site allows people to search by business or personnel name, license number, or a salesperson’s registration number.

Stress…   Reduce it and Increase Your Profits

-excerpted with permission from a May 9, 2001 presentation by Carolyn Gross

Today’s business environment has escalated the rate at which we do business.  It has also produced 200 billion dollars worth of insurance claims, lost productiv-ity, and absenteeism.  There is a direct and adverse relationship between work stress and decreased annual earnings.  Studies show that in most cases, as work stress increases, productivity decreases.  In fact, 80% of all illness today is stress related.  Can you afford not to address stress in the workplace?

Causes
Knowing the causes of stress helps us put more self-care strategies into action.  Causes of stress fall into the following categories:
C     Change, Crisis
R     Responsibilities, Risk
I     Inexperience, Indecision
D     Demand, Deadlines, Deadbeats
L      Loss (of job, relationship, etc.)

Symptoms
Before you can reduce stress, you need to recognize that you are stressed.  Below are some symptoms of stress:

If you have more than two or three of these symptoms, you might be stressed.

Solutions

Here are some tips for reducing stress:

Old Cell Phone Can Give New Lease on Life

You know that wireless cell phone you're no longer using?  The one that’s sitting in your drawer or closet right now?  It could literally save the life of one of the 5000-plus victims who are beaten and abused every day.
Instead of tossing them in the garbage when new ones are purchased, these hand-sets can be given to the “Donate-A-Phone” program that helps domestic violence vic-tims.  Sponsored by the Wireless Foundation, the “Donate-A-Phone” cam-paign was launched in September 1999 to collect and refurbish a portion of the 24 million wireless phones no longer being used.  The phones are reprogrammed with 911 and other emergency numbers so do-mestic violence victims can access local emergency services and hotline numbers at the touch of a button.
From May 1 to July 31, 2001, RadioShack is once again partnering with the Wireless Foundation to collect cell phones for the program.  You can drop off your outdated cell phone at any of RadioShack’s 7,100 stores.  Phones and accessories in any condition will be gladly accepted, and all donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
For further information on this campaign, to find a RadioShack near you, or to start your own collection program, access the Web site:  www.donateaphone.com .
