The Annual R7 Summer Picnic is still months away, but it’s not too soon to start saving your used equipment to donate to the regional Emergency Fund Auction that takes place every year at the auction. I’m working on getting a place to store the donations until the picnic. So remember, if you have any new or used pool equipment in good working order that you wish to donate, give me a call.
Blue Cards: Make sure your chapter members have signed and are using the new blue cards. These updated cards minimize IPSSA liability.
Water certification: Region 10 is 100% Water Certified. How about R7 . . . ?
The 13th Annual Installation Weekend took place the weekend of Friday - Sunday, Feb. 23 – 25. As usual, it was informative and a great opportunity to network with others in the pool business. Next year I hope to see more representation from R7.

Region 9: Region has own web site – www.texasipssa.com. Looking into health insurance for the region.
Region 10: The following statement was read:
It is with great pride that we announce that Region 10 is 100% IPSSA Water Chemistry certified. This feat was accomplished through the hard work and effort of the Regional directors, and every chapter board in the region. It was our intent to not only improve the caliber of our membership but to prove to the organization that it could be done.
We have very few casualties and consider the outcome well worth the trials we endured. In an effort to further raise the bar of professionalism in our region, the members of Region 10 Board unanimously approved the following motion on January 9, 2001: "All members of Region 10 must be properly licensed for the work they are performing by January 31, 2002. Any member found operating after January 31, 2002 without being properly licensed will be disciplined per Article IV, Section 4.7 of IPSSA’s Bylaws."
Only three members were canceled because they didn’t pass. Region membership dropped off 7% because some members decided to drop rather than take the test.
Website Update:
Website at www.ipssa.com is currently up to date with information that has been provided to Kim McGill. Next project will be to create advertising banners, which will require outside help. Several requests were made for additions to the website, including the Scholarship application/ information, Contractors State License School information, SPEC and other hotlinks, member form for inclusion on website and updates, a counter to determine number of hits, e-mail links to B.O.R.D. members. There was also a request for members’ names to come up instead of company names in the search area for members; also area codes where members work instead of where they live. Comments relating to the website should be e-mailed to ipssa.office@verizon.net for Kim McGill’s attention.
Scholarship Committee Report:
Response for requests to the Fund has been overwhelming; initial goal of $25,000 has been reached. Extending deadline to March 15 for Founding Contributors. Founding Contributors are Associate Members or Chapters donating $1,000 or more or individual donating $100 or more. Applications available in mid-April through the IPSSA Office, IPSSA website, and Service Industry News.First funding will take place in mid-summer. Maximum funding will not be more than 25% of amount in fund. A monitoring policy will be developed to guarantee that classes are completed. Biggest issue facing the committee will be to develop a continuing mechanism for funding through fund-raisers, benefactors, etc. Kirk Gillette commended Jim Ciccone for his perseverance in initiating the concept of the Scholarship Fund.
1989 San Fernando Valley Chapter donation of $10,000:
Celia Hugueley read from the Oct. 1989 minutes the statement made by Ivan Vance on the presentation of $10,000 to IPSSA for promotion and advertising. It was pointed out that this money has never been used. Both Ivan Vance and Elias Duran clarified that the funds were to be used for brochures, written material, and advertising purposes.Funding Request:
Rick Bishop presented a request for funding by the San Diego chapter for half the cost of the purchase of T-shirts for members to wear in a Multiple Sclerosis Walk. The shirts would have the IPSSA logo on front and back. The issue of setting a precedent for other chapters to make similar requests was discussed; how can the B.O.R.D. be fair concerning such requests and how can there be control of such requests. Motion was made by Rick Bishop and seconded by Dave Perry that the B.O.R.D. approve half the $400 cost for the purchase of T-shirts for the San Diego Chapter’s participation in a Multiple Sclerosis Walk. Motion failed.Certification:
Proposed motion to add the following (tabled until the March 24 meeting) – "If the test is not passed within one hear, the member will be suspended until the test is passed. Procedure of suspension under Article IV, Section 4.5, c.1 shall be followed."According to a recent study by the National Federation of Independent Business Owners, only 16% of small businesses currently have a web site.
