If you are like me, you don't adequately protect yourself from sun exposure on a daily basis. I don't make it a priority to use sunscreen and wear a hat throughout the year. I hope that I don't have to pay the price of the above any day soon. My doctor will probably scold me at a physical scheduled for next month. You, on the other hand, have an opportunity to listen to and ask questions of a volunteer of the American Cancer Society at the General Meeting next week. Show up. It may save a life. Namely, yours. Secretary Report There was no official report as John was not present. His verbal phone report was that Fred Walker of POOLSAFE COVER SYSTEMS would be profiled in the next Skimmer. Treasurer's Report Mark presented his monthly report of income and expenses. As always we are in good shape financially. (See Skimmer for the detailed report). Note there was a $200 donation to the Guy Muto Fund. There was a discussion about the need for an annual audit of the books, which would simply verify that listed expenses matched canceled checks. IPSSA management and the BORD commended our Chapter for our good records and the way we handle our Chapter finances and obligations. There will be a notice placed in the Skimmer to remind Chapter Supporters about their annual dues. Vise President's Report Mike advised that Kathleen N Hargrove of the American Cancer Society will be our speaker this month at our General Meeting. Included as a part of her presentation will be a video. It was noted that there are no prospective new members at this time. An idea was offered about contacting our suppliers about encouraging non-affiliated service technicians to consider joining IPSSA. The San Diego IPSSA membership notice has not been installed at the new Superior Products store. Mike reported that he had talked to Bob Fowler about speaking sometime in the future on how to run a successful pool service business, conduct promotions, hire and train employees, take vacations, determine prices for service and repairs. President's Report Jon discussed his efforts in dealing with a member who owed a fine for not submitting a Blue Card on time. The fine was finally paid. Members are reminded that the Chapter has rules which must be observed or fines will be levied. It was agreed after some discussion that this aspect is the most frustrating and unpleasant part of serving the Chapter. Pete Reinhart of the Carlsbad Chapter recently died from cancer. Our Chapter will send his wife a check for $500. The minutes of the last BORD meeting were reviewed.
Committee Reports Sick Leave: Howard Guerrant is out on sick leave and his pools are being serviced. He is doing well and is on track to full recovery. Chapter Advisor: No report. If they want to be reimbursed they must submit this information to Jim or they will not be compensated. It is a good time to plan and prepare to get your contractor license. Remember you must apply for assistance before you take the class. There was a discussion about a recent situation where this was not done and the member could not be given any reimbursement. No application was made before the class was taken. There was a discussion about the 50% reimbursement schedule. The current rule in Standing Rules Article VII, Section 5 Approval states: Schedule of Financial Assistance will be 50% of the cost of the class. seminar or course amount. A motion was made seconded and approved by the Board to change this statement to: Schedule of Financial Assistance will be up to 50% of the cost of the class, seminar or course amount. Jim was asked to call one or more Contractor License Schools about coming to the Chapter to tell what they do and what you get from them. We may seek a volume discount for using their school. Public Relations It was noted that Dan Molte the young student who saved a child's life by administering CPR will be honored at a Senior Awards event at El Cajon Valley High School on June 15th. Our Chapter has rewarded him with a scholarship. Manufacturer's Rebate We are still waiting to hear from Sta Rite on the amount we have earned through our combined purchases. THE MAY 2000 SKIMMER PROFILE
Poolsafe Cover Systems In 1987 I had been working as a travel consultant for Universal Travel, Inc in Rancho Bernardo. My wife said that her brother was looking for someone who could do part time sales in the safety cover business. After work one afternoon I met with him for a few minutes to get a cram course in the pool industry and went out that night to run a lead. I came back the next day with a contract and deposit in hand whereupon he asked me, "Would you consider working full time?" My involvement in the pool cover business has led me to other opportunities such as volunteer work with Children's Hospital in the Safe Kids Coalition. Specifically with the Drowning Task Force we have done public speaking with local PTA's, hospital auxiliaries, and school flinctions. Once I even donned the Gus costume (of Gus 'n Goldie) to parade around the Parent/Child Expo reminding the youth to swim safely. A memorable story from work was one day I had an appointment to meet a couple with a child just moving into a home with a pool. While standing next to the pool discussing the benefits of the Poolsafe cover, their 3 year old daughter standing near us lell right into the pool! I instinctively reached down and grabbed her arm pulling her back up to the deck.. She was scared but okay and the couple decided right then and there to purchase a cover! Now, back at the office I related this story and was accused by one of our staff members that I purposely scooted the girl into the pool with my foot! Keep It a Safe Summer! Fred Walker
