A.O.SMITH ELECTRICAL PRODUCTS COMPANY 23 March 2000 2452 Dryden Rd El Cajon, CA 92020 Mark: The purpose of this letter is to address the grievances brought to my attention during the telcon earlier this week, and amendments already in progress. Mark, some issues we can control, others, considering realistic items such as UL, are beyond our control. This isn't from a lack of caring, It's from disciplines set in place by governing bodies. I'll address each concern below: Item: Blue Lead From Protector To Terminal Board Blocks Ground Screw A few years back, this wire was left free to "dangle" and it was brought to our attention that it had a tendency to become caught between the rear endbell and the canopy when replacing the canopy. This would cause a break In the insulation, or even break the wire. Because of this, the blue line lead is now "retained" to another wire, horsepower/model depending, and the wire is actually "pulled" toward the white wire. We believe it is now "out of the way" and was indeed so on a new motor inspected in our warehouse for verification. The plans (the blueprirts'materials list) used to build motors on the line do indeed include this retaining sheath and the procedure. If you find this practice Is not happeritng, or is still unacceptable, please advise. We too will do "spot checks" to verify this has rectified this issue. Furthermore, in the event it is felt, even with the retaining sleeve that acess to the ground terminal is still restricted, A.O. Smith engineers will consider a tighter sleeve for even more clearance. Item: New Terminal Board Line Lead Set Screws Kudos! Unaware to me, this was already brought to the plant's attention about 90 days ago. Truly, #12 wire was NOT able to be reasonably inserted under the new set scre"s and an immediate change was made to a screw that is 1/16" longer. #12 wire is now able to be used, however, #10 is questionable. UL had no concerns over the testing with #10 wire, however, there is conversation in progress with regards to the #10 line wire size screw and it is already under consideration. Item: Canopy Retaining Screws Unreasonably Long This is still under investigation. Apparently this is indeed a UL issue, concerning vibration and the screws "backing out" in time. UL issues are LONG, DRAWN out PAINFUL processes that seem to take an eternity to address and even change. For the immediate future, it is felt that a change is not going to be seen in the near future, until it can "proven" to UL that a shorter retaining screw is indeed safe, or not. Our efforts will continue. Item: Bonding Lug/Cap Start-Cap Run Motors Upon receipt of your sample, I will deliver it along with a detailed report/real world scenario regarding the lack of ease in which to work with the current bonding lug. I was told that in the past, several designs were presented to UL, however, all were rejected for various reasons. However, the time is right to bring this toplc back up to the top, and see if we can't do something reasonable in order to achieve the same result. I have been told that we are taking a strong look at the very least to relocate the lug for easier access. Mark, finally, please realize that both AO. Smith and I are very intetssted in your concerns and thank you for bringing them to our attention. The success(es) of our motor buslness has been based on "paying attention" and making reasonable changes within the constraints we have to work in. I will advise of the progress of each as they occur. Finnally, thank you for bringing this to our attention. Sincerely,
Mark R. Lane
