El Presidente's Message
I have two questions for the members who did not attend the last meeting. Do you
know what is stated in Docket LIM 200 Materials of Trade Exceptions to the DOT regulations? Do you have a copy of the exceptions together with MSD sheets to hand to the officer (smile) who is about to cite you for violations of the statutes and regulations pertaining to the transportation of hazardous materials? If you answered no to one or both of the above questions, you may want to attend meetings on a regular basis.

I would like to thank Vince Gillette, Vice President and General Manager, Pool Systems, of Laars/Jandy for his generous donation of $500 to further the education of our members. It is our intent to use his additional donation of $500 to assist a member of the Carlsbad chapter who has brain cancer. Vance also provided a copy of the book "The Roaring 2000's" to the members who attended the meeting. Vance will be speaking on a range of topics pertinent to business at the NSPI meeting on 3/14/2000.

Next month the Skimmer will include a profile or "spotlight" of a chapter supporter. The intent is to strengthen the relationship of the individual(s) with the chapter. Stay tuned.

JON

PRODUCT TESTING REPORT
PRODUCT CF-138

CF-138 is designed as a D.E. substitute. It is currently available at all the major suppliers. Below is listed some of the positive and some of the questionable attributes of the product.

On the Positive Side

  1. Less quantity needed, (more truck space available). 1/4 to 1/8 as much product needed as compared to D.E.
  2. Biodegradable - basically paper.
  3. User friendly- not as toxic as D.E., but never breath a considerable amount of any fine particulate. It may be found to be harmful some time in the future.
  4. Fine filtration - 2 microns. Cleaner water may be noticeable after 2 filter cycles.
  5. Does not bridge to other grids. reducing usable filtration area.
  6. Seems to work better in winter. (Don't we all!)
  7. Back washes out of system completely.

On the Down Side

  1. More expensive.
  2. Product completely separates when water flow is shut off.
  3. Shorter back wash cycles - Somewhat temperature dependent.
  4. A little algae problem plugs up filter quickly.
  5. "Old water" seems to short cycle filter much faster with C.F. than D.E.
  6. Possible "mixing" with dirt and debris at the beginning of each cycle, due to complete separation of product from filter grids when filtering cycle is over.
